{"id":2046,"date":"2016-08-10T02:20:35","date_gmt":"2016-08-10T01:20:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/archaeovision.eu\/?p=2046"},"modified":"2016-08-10T02:19:16","modified_gmt":"2016-08-10T01:19:16","slug":"the-ethics-of-dust","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archaeovision.eu\/en\/projects\/the-ethics-of-dust\/","title":{"rendered":"The Ethics of Dust: Westminster Hall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last year Archaeovision were contacted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artangel.org.uk\/\">Artangel<\/a>\u00a0in regard to their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artangel.org.uk\/project\/the-ethics-of-dust\/\">Ethics of Dust project<\/a>.\u00a0The Ethics of Dust is a major temporary site-specific artwork of\u00a0Westminster Hall, the oldest part of the Houses of Parliament, home of the UK\u2019s House of Commons and House of Lords. A\u00a050 metre long translucent latex cast of the hall\u2019s internal and external east wall were recorded, containing hundreds of years of surface pollution and dust. The latex copies were created by artist, architect and conservationist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oteropailos.com\/\">Jorge Otero-Pailos<\/a>\u00a0whose has completed similar projects of the\u00a0historic family home of Louis Vuitton; the\u00a0Victoria &amp; Albert Museum&#8217;s copy of Trajan&#8217;s Column; the\u00a0Roman silver mines of Carthago Nova; and the 14th century\u00a0Doge&#8217;s Palace in Venice.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2054\" style=\"width: 833px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2054\" class=\"wp-image-2054 portfolio-lazyLoad\" src=\"http:\/\/archaeovision.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Cleaning_Westminster_Hall_2015_c_DBR-1024x682.jpg\" data-original=\"http:\/\/archaeovision.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Cleaning_Westminster_Hall_2015_c_DBR-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Technicians removing the latex in Westminster Hall, 2015. Photo courtesy DBR Limited<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Completed in 1099, Westminster Hall\u2019s limestone walls may well hold the dust, soot and dirt generated by events including the Second World War blitz and the Great Smog of 1952. Among its many uses, the hall has housed the coronation banquet of King George IV in 1821, the trials of Guy Fawkes in 1606 and King Charles I in 1649. Hill after a drawing by Augustus Charles Pugin and John Claude Nattes. \u00a9 Parliamentary Art Collection<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Due to the recording nature of the latex, the walls were separated into individual sections and it was unknown how each part fitted together. Archaeovision were contacted to record these sections and provide an outline of their detail to help within the creation of a framing unit. A photogrammetry survey was completed of each latex section as the method provided exact digital copies that where within the budget available. These separate models were scaled and merged together to create an overall outline which were then digitised. Artangel have since used these plans to create the necessary frames, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/visiting\/visiting-parliament-news\/the-ethics-of-dust-in-westminster-hall-2016\/\">exhibition<\/a> can now be seen at Westminster Hall.
