In August of last year we published a post<\/a> on the laser scanning work that we completed in June of 2014 of the\u00a0Insula Dell\u2019ara Coeli\u00a0based at the foot of the\u00a0Capitoline Hill in Rome.<\/p>\n

Work has been ongoing since then and we are now in a position to release an animation of the laser scan model recorded. We are unable to show\u00a0the\u00a0high resolution images of the data\u00a0as it\u00a0is still under examination by Dr. Elisabetta Bianchi\u00a0from the\u00a0Sovraintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali and\u00a0Dr. Dragana Mladenovi\u0107 of the University of Southampton\u2019s Archaeology department.<\/p>\n

The model has been separated into the different floor levels to allow those with less computing power to view it\u00a0and use it for the precise measurements that are needed within the investigation.<\/p>\n

More on the overall project can be found on the University of Southampton’s Archaeology site<\/a>\u00a0that include the next stages of investigation of the Capitoline Hill. Overall the laser scan work has been able to meet the initial aim of the project, by\u00a0creating a detailed documentation of the building which can now be used to understand its difficult\u00a0layout.\u00a0It provides an exact replica of the structure and creates a piece of digital history but preserving the current state of this second century building. We will be working closely with the project as it develops and it is hoped that in the future we can release the laser scan models online to allow for a virtual access that is otherwise unattainable as the building is closed for public access.<\/p>\n
